2) Have a pencil and pad handy: Besides jotting down notes, you may need to note down the screw settings and their positions. It is advisable to note down the positions of the front and rear portions and the sides.

3) Organize your building space: Have a clean and dry towel to keep the car parts from rolling away and it will also help to absorb any fluid spills. Ensure that you cover up the car when you leave it for the day. Also, have your work area where you will not be disturbed. You also need ample lighting to be comfortable while working at the job.

4) Use of containers: It is a good idea to store all the small parts in hardware trays. You can use empty containers, tins or boxes to keep all the smaller parts separated and sorted out.

5) Have a good set of Tools: If you are a serious car builder, you have to procure a set of basic tools such as Phillips head screwdrivers, jewelers’ screwdrivers and a 1 ¼th inch flat blade screwdriver. One set of slip –joint and needle nose pliers can be procured. If you have a nitro model car, you may also require control lock pliers to grasp flywheels. For lines and parts that need to be close cut, you need a flush cutter.

Beginners of this hobby must have patience as remote controlled cars are a new challenge for them. However, there is a great thrill in building your own radio control car from scratch, and it can be a fun activity.

Tips on How to Store Radio Controlled Cars

First things first! Why is it important to clean and properly store radio controlled cars? Do you remember the reason your mother always told you to clean yourself up, clean your room, wash the dishes, etc.? That is – to keep you clean as well as up and running.

The same is true with radio controlled cars. The following are effective and necessary tips to store and keep those vehicles in great shape.

Believe it or not, the fuels used in nitro trucks or cars as well as in radio-controlled cars contain lubricants. The lubricants in these cars actually serve to protect the engine. This is due to the fact that not all of it gets burned when the engine runs. This therefore results in a chassis that is coated with a lot of oil which made its exit from the car’s pipe.

The way to remove this as easily as possible is by using a cleaner: one example is Simple Green. However, it is best to first remove all and any radio equipment before cleaning; after which, plug the inlets onto the engine. Another option is by removing the engine itself.

The chassis should then be sprayed down lightly. Use a brush that has a firm bristle to knock away any grime. Once the chassis has been cleaned, use a towel to dry it. Then, re-install the removed components.

The majority of radio-controlled cars have an electric starter. The bearings in this starter should always be oiled and cleaned at least every week or two.

The starter should then be removed as carefully as possible. The use of a screwdriver is an effective way to keep the pressure on the mechanism as the starter is pulled off the plate’s back.

Spray the bearing with engine spray in order to clean it. Oil the bearing in order to keep it running smoothly. You will discover that once the engine and starter is reassembled, it will work almost as good as new.

Fuel should be stored in a place that is dry and – as much as possible – away from pets, children, or anyone else who could mistake the fuel as washer for the windshield.

All in all, when fuel is stored, it could absorb water vapor over a significant amount of time, especially if the container is not sealed perfectly. It is best to store bottles on a cardboard and not on the carpet directly or on cement.

Are glow plug starters all the same size for all the nitro rc cars…???

I jus got a nitro rc car and dont know much about them. I got everything but the glow starter. And im thinking of getting one off ebay. Its the same brand as my truck but jus wondering if they make differnt size tips or anything. thanks
I would love to go to a local hobby shop but i cant find any around here which is why i had to order the stuff online.

RC Drift Cars, Tips for Building Your Own

Especially since the release of “The Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift,” we all know that car drifting is very popular in Japan. However, the popularity of the sport is spilling over into the United States rc car market. Did you know there is such a thing as rc drift cars? There is, in fact rc drifting has become a highly recognized sport. Once you see it, you will be hooked. Here are some things you should know when building an rc drift car.

First of all, electric rc cars are far better than nitro models when it comes to drifting. That is because it’s easier to control the throttle of an electric car, especially during a drift. Attempting to drift with a Nitro rc cars leads to a burnt out clutch and an overheated engine most of the time. It is highly recommended to use a shaft drive rc car as opposed to a belt driven transmission for your drifter. This allows for the best throttle response and avoids the backlash which often occurs due to the belt design. If you are building from scratch, shaft drive cars will make for the best drifters.

When it comes to the motor, you need high torque. It is very common to use 19 turn motors. The standard Mabuchi 540 works fine as well. Be sure to gear your car for acceleration and not for top speed. Also be sure to use a four wheel drive machine. 4×4 is much easier to control when drifting. If you already have a functional touring car, than turning your car into a drifter simply requires a tire change. RC drifters usually use tires made up of PVC pipes. Although you can also use ABS pipes, which are slightly softer than PVC material, or rubber tires that would be wrapped in electrical tape.

If you want to make your own PVC tires you need to buy a ten feet long, two inch diameter PVC pipe from your local hardware store. Get them as round as possible and avoid shops that sell deformed, or oval-shaped pipes. Another alternative is to buy specially made drift tires that are manufactured by Yokomo. These are rubber tires that have grooves in which you mount the Yokomo made drift ring onto. Another inexpensive way of building your own drift tires is to use a plastic cap that can be found on a spray paint can. These typically fit onto a regular touring car rubber tire and it would be much easier than cutting your own PVC tires.

When building your rc drift car just remember to get the accessories that are sized just right. A lot of times PVC pipes are slightly larger in diameter and a drifter is meant to be composed exactly to perfection. Other than that, stay away from nitro rc cars and form your new rc drift car out of any electric rc car out there. RC drifting has never been so easy.
